Merchandising Goal
The role of a modern merchandiser is to increase clothing sales by identifying and promoting
current fashion trends. Fashion merchandisers are involved in the curation and planning of merchandise,
analyzing data and forecasting trends, building and maintaining relationships, marketing and promotion,
and working with multiple departments. They must be involved in the functions that result in the creation,
development, and delivery of a product line. Being aware of societal changes, leisure activities, movies,
arts, fitness, philosophies of life, climate changes, and global economies are important.
Personally, I see myself in this role in the future. I love the retail environment and the marketing/fore
casting of the products. The vision I have for myself and my team in the future would be to focus heavily on
the curation and planning of merchandise. Curation and planning of merchandiseinvolves planning what
merchandise to stock for a brand by analyzing past buying behaviors of customers. Forecasting trends is
also an important area to focus on. This ensures the products the company will sell are following the
development of current trends.
Currently, there is a heavy flow of excess inventory throughout the fashion industry. Most retailers
are left to markdown this overflow of product or ship it to a discount retailer. If companies begin to
plan more accordingly and forecast sales particular to each product, the excess inventory will be cut in half.
This is important because sustainable fashion is the future.
As a fashion merchandiser, it is important to ensure the company is following sustainable routes.
Not all companies are there yet but they will have to in order to keep customers. The environmental
impact is important because garment waste is filling up landfills. Not only are merchandisers
required to increase clothing sales for companies, they are also vital to the companies success in the future.
